University of Liverpool accommodation at a glance
The university calls its main site the Knowledge Quarter campus, or the city centre campus, and divides it into north, central and south. The north campus, near the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, is home to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The central campus, by the Metropolitan Cathedral, has the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Guild of Students and the Harold Cohen Library. The south campus, around Abercromby Square, is mainly the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Veterinary students also use the Leahurst campus at Neston, 12 miles from the city.
Daulby Street, beside the north campus, and the Georgian Quarter, beside the south campus, are about 10 minutes on foot from the Guild of Students. The far side of the city centre, around Vauxhall Road, is 25 to 30 minutes away. Private contracts run mostly from 40 to 51 weeks.
For 2026/27 the University of Liverpool’s own first-year rooms run from £177.45 a week, for a small single room at Greenbank Student Village, to £280.56 a week for a studio apartment at Vine Court, though few rooms are at either price. Most Greenbank rooms are Premier rooms at £219.03 a week. All are on the first-year contract of 39 weeks, from 19 September 2026 to 19 June 2027. Returning undergraduates are on 42 weeks and postgraduates on 51 weeks.
Private student accommodation or university accommodation?
First-year and foundation year undergraduates who apply by the university’s deadline, which was 31 August for 2026 entry, are guaranteed a room, though not a particular residence. You apply through the university’s online application portal and give your preferences, and the university allocates.
Its first-year rooms on the campus are at Crown Place, Vine Court, Philharmonic Court and Melville Grove. Greenbank Student Village, where over 1,300 first years live, is next to Penny Lane in the south of the city, a bus ride from the campus.
A guaranteed room can also be in a private building. The university has approved partner providers, which offer rooms to first years on the same 39 week contract and dates as its own, and there the contract is with the provider, not the university. Capital Gate and Agnes Jones House are both partner buildings. Through the university in 2026/27, first years are offered en-suite rooms at Capital Gate at £181 to £199 a week and rooms with a shared bathroom at Agnes Jones House at £110 a week. Agnes Jones House is offered to postgraduates as well, on a 51 week contract at a separate rate. Both buildings also take bookings direct, at the provider’s own prices and contract lengths.
Any student can book a private building direct, in first year or later, subject to each provider’s eligibility rules, and choose the building, the room and the contract length. Through the university you are allocated a room, on 39 weeks as a first year.
Best areas for University of Liverpool students
Walking times are to the Guild of Students, for the central and north campus, and to Abercromby Square, for the south campus.
- The north end, by the hospital. Daulby Street and Lower Gill Street are beside the north campus. Capital Gate on Daulby Street, where studios start from £277 a week, and iQ Great Newton House on Lower Gill Street, from £162.00, are both about 10 minutes on foot from the Guild and 10 to 15 minutes from Abercromby Square.
- The Georgian Quarter.Agnes Jones House on Catharine Street, with rooms from £105.00 a week, is opposite the south campus. The Hope Street building, from £135.00 a week, and Haigh Court on South Hunter Street, from £128.25, are a few streets to the west. Abercromby Square is 5 to 10 minutes from all three, and the Guild about 10 minutes.
- The Anglican Cathedral and Upper Duke Street. Towards Chinatown and Bold Street, Fusion Liverpool on Upper Duke Street starts from £175.00 a week and Cathedral Campus, beside the Anglican Cathedral, from £137.00. Abercromby Square is about 15 minutes away and the Guild 15 to 20 minutes.
- Islington and Shaw Street.Unity Square on Shaw Street, from £133.00 a week, is north-east of the campus, next to Liverpool Hope University’s Creative Campus. The Guild is about 15 minutes on foot and Abercromby Square about 20 minutes.
- The far side of the city centre.Fontenoy Apartments on Fontenoy Street, with studios from £170.00 a week, and Glassworks on Vauxhall Road, from £140.00, are near Liverpool John Moores University’s City Campus. From Fontenoy Street the walk is 20 to 25 minutes to the Guild or to Abercromby Square, and from Vauxhall Road 25 to 30 minutes. Both walks cross the city centre and finish up Brownlow Hill.

Getting to the University of Liverpool campus
The campus is uphill from the city centre. Lime Street station is a 10 minute walk from the nearest edge of the campus by the university’s figure, and about 15 minutes from the Guild, up Brownlow Hill. Liverpool Central station is about 15 minutes from the Guild too, and the Liverpool ONE bus station, where National Express coaches stop, about 20 minutes.
Buses stop around the edges of the campus. The 86, 86A and 86C run frequently from the city centre, and the 79 and 79C connect the campus area with the suburbs. Merseytravel’s adult single fare is £2 on any operator’s buses in Merseyside and Halton.
From Greenbank Student Village the 699, an Arriva bus, runs to the campus in term time from a stop outside the village reception, around a 20 minute ride plus the wait. Greenbank residents can buy an Arriva pass for the 2026/27 academic year at the Guild for £111, against a standard price of £450. The discounted pass is sold only until the end of Semester 1.
Bolt has run the city’s hire e-scooters and e-bikes since February 2026. You must be 18 to register, and a scooter needs at least a provisional driving licence, though an e-bike does not. The Guild hires out bikes by the semester or the year, and the campus has secure bike storage but no student parking.
What is included and the room types
At each private building named above, bills included covers gas, electricity, water and internet, and some providers add contents insurance. A TV Licence, if you need one to watch or record live television or use BBC iPlayer, is separate and costs £180 a year. The University of Liverpool’s rents include electricity, gas, water and wi-fi.
Room types run from a bedroom with a shared bathroom, at Agnes Jones House and Cathedral Campus, through en-suite rooms in shared flats, to studios with their own kitchen. The university has single and en-suite rooms, studios and studio apartments, and catered rooms at Vine Court.
A year’s rent depends on how many weeks you sign for. A first year in a single en-suite room at Crown Place pays £197.33 a week for 39 weeks in 2026/27, which comes to £7,695.87. Booked direct for 2026/27, a Premium Compact Ensuite at Agnes Jones House is £147 a week on a 44 week contract, £6,468 over the contract, or £139 a week on 51 weeks, £7,089.
The university’s rents are its 2026/27 figures, and private prices are the providers’ current ones.
Contracts, deposits and guarantors
A private room comes on a contract with the building’s provider for the number of weeks you book. The Tenant Fees Act 2019 limits what you can be asked for up front. A tenancy deposit is capped at five weeks’ rent where the year’s rent is under £50,000, and a holding deposit at one week’s rent. From 1 May 2026, most assured tenancies in England’s private rented sector became periodic rather than fixed term. Purpose-built student accommodation is an exception, and a contract signed on or after that date to move into it can still run for a fixed term, according to the government’s Housing Hub. That applies to providers signed up to an approved code of practice, such as the ANUK/Unipol National Code.
A University of Liverpool room is let on the university’s Student Accommodation Licence, and its rent is collected in three instalments, in October, January and April, by Direct Debit from a UK bank account or by recurring card payment.
Private providers can ask for a guarantor, someone who agrees to pay the rent if you do not, and a guarantor service will take on that role for a fee where the provider accepts one. Our guarantor guide goes through both.
Full-time students can be exempt from council tax. Liverpool City Council does not charge a household where everyone is a full-time student, and takes 25% off the bill where one adult in the household is not a student. If a bill arrives anyway, you apply to the council, and the university issues a council tax certificate through its student portal as proof.
Student life around the University of Liverpool
The Guild of Students, on the central campus, has the Sphinx bar and its Guild Garden, open from noon to midnight in term time, the Union Brew coffee shop, the Guild Shop and Mountford Hall, where gigs are held. The Harold Cohen Library is open 24 hours a day, and the Sydney Jones Library, by Abercromby Square, from 8am to 10pm.
The Sports and Fitness Centre on Bedford Street North has a 25 metre pool, a gym, squash courts and bouldering walls. Liverpool ONE and the shops around it are about 20 minutes’ walk downhill from the Guild.
From Greenbank Student Village, Greenbank Park is 5 minutes’ walk and Sefton Park 10 minutes. The Asda and Aldi on Smithdown Road are 20 to 25 minutes on foot, or a short ride on the 699.

The university gives the distance as three miles. Walking takes 45 to 50 minutes, and the 699 bus around 20 minutes.
Do I need a bus pass?
Not from the private buildings named above, where the walk to the campus is 25 to 30 minutes at the longest. At Greenbank most students use the 699, and the £111 pass for residents costs less than 28 return trips at the £2 single fare.
Can first years book a private room instead?

Where can I live in second and third year?
Returning undergraduates can apply for a university room on a 42 week contract, but those rooms are limited and are not guaranteed. Private buildings take returning students direct. The north end and the Georgian Quarter are the areas within about 10 minutes’ walk of the Guild.
Where do University of Liverpool postgraduates live?
Most of the university’s campus residences are open to postgraduates, on a 51 week contract that runs from 5 September 2026 to 28 August 2027 for 2026/27, and postgraduates who share a kitchen are placed with other postgraduates. Agnes Jones House and Glassworks have 51 week contracts as well.
What about international students?
The university has a separate guarantee for single international students who make Liverpool their firm choice and apply by 31 July, a month ahead of the general deadline.
Are there shorter contracts for January starters?
Some private buildings have them, such as the 26 week contract from 9 January 2027 at iQ Great Newton House. The university does not guarantee a room for a January start, and recommends applying at least three weeks ahead of your arrival date.
